Situated in the heart of Northampton are 3 large shopping centres which include The Grosvenor centre, Peacock Place, and the Weston Favell Centre which caters to tens of thousands of visitors each and every week, often filling the 20 car parks and 6000 places to capacity.

Unfortunately, with so many people visiting the county throughout the year and with Northampton having such a large population, this has inevitably led to higher crime figures being reported. The extra sales from droves of shoppers may be great for businesses but they are often the biggest targets and worst affected by crime.

According to the Office of National Statistics, between the years of 2012-13 in Northampton alone, there were 14007 criminal offences committed with 6205 incidents being as a result of burglary, arson, robbery and criminal damage.

To help combat crime and reduce overall crime rates several councils in Northamptonshire took the initiative to install a large number of CCTV cameras in several key locations.

CCTV monitoring in action

CCTV SolutionsInitially there was a lot of debate as to whether installing CCTV would make any difference at all to crime rates in Northampton, so the trial CCTV monitoring schemes were setup. However, the police started to see the benefits after only a short period of time.

In 1992 Northampton council started installing cameras which have steadily increased over time to around 490 cameras currently in operation.

In 2008 CCTV cameras were installed on The Brackmills Industrial Estate, a business improvement district and in the 12 months CCTV operators assisted Northampton Police in arresting 2,923 people while reducing the overall crime rates by 49% on the estate and by 83% for lorry crimes. Anti-social behaviour also dropped by 34%.

In Northampton between 2013 /14 camera operators assisted police with more than 16,000 incidents and helped in the arrest of 1,722 people. Wellingborough police have reported an average of 20 arrests a month as a direct result of having CCTV monitoring in place.

For the past five years with security cameras installed, Corby has made 4200 arrests and seen a 37% reduction in crime with anti-social behaviour dropping by 24%.

There is no doubt that the initial costs incurred by each council have been far outweighed by the additional arrests made, and is a true testament to how effective CCTV monitoring can be in the fight against crime.
